Glen Elbe Learning Centre (GELC) is the home of Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust. (TIWLT). TIWLT’s main focus is conserving land and we also conserve heritage.
GELC was first the home of Ninian Bates, brother to Joshua in Athens. Ninian owned part of the plank road and the stage company from Brockville to Westport. Ninian build the house in 1838 from the reclaimed wood of the first mill and house. TIWLT has lovingly restored the house and rebuilt the stagecoach stop barn to be part of the “history you can touch” in this part of Upper Canada. We have a climate change arboretum and sell Carolinian trees and heritage garden plants.
We welcome the public and school groups by appointment.
